Thanks to teacher and comedienne Tracy Rosenberg, I was able to speak to several classes at Intermediate School 24 on Staten Island. The classes consisted of 6th, 7th and 8th graders in performing arts. For many it was the first time they had met a professional comedian, but my message that day did not only revolve around laughter. I gave life long lessons, which were reinforced through, “Thank You,” cards I received over the weekend from each and every student. It was a very rewarding experience for me speaking to the youth of America and look forward to speaking to many more classes throughout the school year.
There is no question that laughter has been proven to have a therapeutic effect on healthy and sick people, alike. But expressing it to younger students, who haven’t had many lifetime experiences, never thought of laughter except as the result of something funny. Some mentioned in their Thank You letters to me that I lifted their spirits that day or put on something funny on television the next day to make them laugh and feel better. That shows that I have changed the way a few students think, it made it all worth while. But it was so much more than that.
Showing them that everyone feels nervous before a speech or going before the public, it’s human nature. If you do feel nervous, it’s because you care, and that’s a good thing because you want to do well. I was able to share a few stories and jokes with the students without them realizing I had gone into material. Best part about it? I didn’t need to curse and the student’s didn’t notice that either until I brought it to their attention. Because of that, I have created, Laughs4Kids.com.
