Hola Mi GEnte!! How y’all! Another week, another food. Lets go East! Far East! Lets talk Mushrooms! Shitake Mushrooms! (gong) Man do I love me some shrooms! Not the magic shrooms you juvenile delinquents, I’m talking Shitake! Portobello! White Button! Bam! Blam! Shizzam! (damn! Im a tool). And don’t get crazy and think you cant eat shrooms because they’re poisonous, actually mushrooms have been used for thousands of years both as food and for medicinal purposes.
Mushrooms are often classified as a vegetable or a herb, but they are actually fungi. That word always makes me think of feet? Weird?.While there are over 14,000 mushrooms, only about 3,000 are edible, about 700 have known medicinal purposes. Less than 1 percent are actually poisonnous! So Blam! Shitakezam! You wont get sick! I promise, unless you go old school Chronicles of Narnia, and start to eat mushrooms growing off of the cow poop. Cmon Mi Gente, we know better! Shitake Mushrooms have been used for centuries by the Chinese and Japanese to treat colds and flu.
Lentinan, a beta-glucan isolated from the fruiting body of shiitake mushrooms, stimulates the immune system, help fight infection, and demonstrates anti-tumor activity. They will beat down any thing that comes into your body and tries to act a fool. ( I apologize, I’m writing this and watching Life of Lil Wayne on VH1). White button mushrooms or Agaricus Bisporus (holla!) can reduce the risk of breast cancer and prostate cancer. An extract of white button mushrooms decreased cell proliferation and decreased tumor size in one study I read.
The chemoprotective effect can be seen with an intake of about 100 grams (3.5 ozs) of mushrooms per day. So get ya Mushroom eatin on! Also They are delish (slang for delicious) go great on pizzas, salads, and I like to even throw them in my omelets. (Egg white, mushroom feta cheese omelet, Chrissy Ds breakfast recommendation of the week). Another added bonus of course, is Mushrooms, any kind, are great for your Colon, You know that I mention Colons In every blog because it so darn important. From now On call me Colon Chris. No exceptions!,. Hot damnit, Mushrooms get that pasty, nasty, poo poo matter that gets stuck to your Colon right the heck off. We need clean colons Mi gente. If 2012 doesn’t get us than poo poo filled Colons will. Ask the Mayans, they know. Mushrooms contain about 80 to 90 percent water, and are very low in calories (only 100 cal/oz). They have very little sodium and fat, and 8 to 10 percent of the dry weight is fiber. Hence, they are an ideal food for persons following a weight management program or a diet for hypertensives.
So if your struggling with weight loss which is causing elevated Blood Pressure, than get down some shrooms. Also that added fiber gives your colon the little “push” it needs to get your “flow” moving regularly towards the “bowl” of happiness. So here it is plain and simple MI Gente. Mushrooms of any kind are a GO! I repeat Mushroom Mania has begun!! Until next time MI Gente!!
