A Time for Valentine … The After Anthem

The Comedy Point Review from
February 15, 2011

A friend suggested I tune into The Comedy Point at 1460 AM radio.
He said, ‘Nic, check this out,” I said, “M’kay.”

I must say, I was impressed. I’m impressed because my attention was engaged. That says quite a bit. Really it does. Since you all have no clue who I am, allow me …
My name is Nicole Sciacca. I bet right now, you’re mulling over how to pronounce my last name. I bet it’s the same challenge of making your tongue touch your elbow. Since that will never happen, I’ll save you the effort and make this easy … it’s pronounced ‘Shocka’. I already know what you’re thinking … But let’s get back to Tuesday night’s show. I must say that Soul Joel, Christine, Richard and Burak create an enticing and energetic spin on talk radio. On Valentine’s Day I did my first radio guest spot and offered my ‘Single’s Point of View’ about Valentine’s Day. One day after Valentine’s Day, here’s what these guys had to say about this holiday fixed by custom where ordinary business is not suspended to honor that little guy brandishing an arrow.

With an enthusiastic line up of guests, who humorously talked about Valentine’s Day, they all had the same question: What makes this day so special? However, I am not so sure I’m feeling ‘Man Appreciation Day’, but since he has more twitter followers than Paris Hilton, the guy must be doing something right. A full day of video games and the other thing is not my thing, but to each their own.
However, my curiosity was piqued with would a female and Justin Timberlake survive in a cave? If that female were me, it would share my comparable survival if I ended up on The Rock of Love Bus Tour. In that case, I’ll stick to what I know and do best — talk copious amounts of waste that seems to entertain some of the population. I never did like buses much.
I connected with everyone regarding their gripes and likes for 2-14. I think everyone collectively agreed that it’s just another day, but to some it’s not. I agree with Maddog Mattern, don’t bitch about it or what Christine had to offer — don’t date anyone close to a holiday. It’s too much pressure.
Is it really a woman’s holiday? I appreciate Burak’s historical factoid: February 14th is the day St. Valentine was beheaded for secretly wedding single soldiers. Realistically, are we celebrating romance and the efforts of a man who went against the rules to promote the sanctioned union of marriage? Or, are we celebrating the day a man’s head was cut off for disobeying the mighty emperor’s code? Maybe this is why some guys aren’t too ‘enchanted’ about Valentine’s Day.

Gathered by the comments from guests … it’s just any other day. We all have our grievances about it. But, let’s face it, it’s merely a day that we ‘commercially’ feel alone. Honestly, how far is a person willing to go just to fit in with the ‘coupled’ demographic? Beauty & the Beast, Blogger, John Powers, mentions that singles’ events basically scream desperation. I ultimately agree with him. It’s a wise observation.
To me, it’s like dating off the Internet. I think many people on these sites are far from selective. Instead they are filling a desperate void for attention from the opposite sex. Then months later down the road, I have to listen to friends tell me that their internet boyfriend is ‘weird’ because she found a bag of toe nail clippings in his closet. That’s what you get for being nosey. For that alone, I’d rather be single and have one less restraining order to file.
Finally to end Tuesday’s show, Grandma Richardson chimed in to aware the entire group that they are in fact, ‘full of it’. I must say, it got a giggle out of me. However, she did offer some useful insight, “When you love someone and it’s really true love, you stick with them because there is no one else better.”
On that note, Tuesday’s show concluded and it’s official to say that Valentine’s Day is over and now we can get back to complaining about other meaningless ‘stuff’.
