How did you get into your business?

Susan:

It started as a personal challenge. My 1 year old son was diagnosed with serious food and environmental allergies, which caused us to start reading labels for food, personal care, cleaning and even products. As I researched, I couldn’t believe how many chemicals and toxins with known health effects were in his everyday food and products. I started blogging about it, then decided to learn more and enrolled at night in a graduate program in sustainable design. One of the classes I took there was about the LEED system and I kept thinking about why something like that didn’t exist for people’s daily lives.

Was there any overlap between starting your business and working a “day” job?

Susan:

No. My day job was intense and I really loved my company. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was onto a really good idea. I finally shared it with a few people, who all urged me to pursue it. I didn’t really put pen to paper until I left. It took a few months to really do the research and put together a business plan, but then it moved very fast.

Describe your craziest day of juggling your professional and personal life?

Susan:

Just one? I have a six year old, a four year old, and a dog. Every day is crazy.

Many people tell me that I work all the time, but I’m passionate about what I do, so I never look at it the way people in corporate America do. Do you live to work or work to live?

Susan:

I sound like you — although I’ve met plenty of people in corporate america who feel like us too.  I think being passionate about how you spend your time, whether that’s working or staying home or pursuing a hobby (or the right mix of all three), is a key to feeling energetic and happy.

Where do you see yourself and your company in 10 years?

Susan:

I think we will be considered one of the leading companies that is driving demand for sustainable living practices, products and services because we have millions of people who LOVE how we make it easier, faster and more fun for them to embrace a healthy green lifestyle. It will take a team of amazing people to get us there and I will be thrilled if I continue to be a key leader on that team.

Does your current living location have anything to do with having your own business or could you live anywhere?

Boston is a great place to be in the intersection of digital technology and sustainability.

During the week to get out of my house, I operate out of Panera Bread, for the delicious food and free internet. Do you work from home or
have a similar working environment?

Susan:

Our team works in an incubator space in Cambridge, MA run by Polaris Ventures. I love it! But I travel a lot so I work from planes, Panera, Starbucks and am in LOVE with the personal hotspot
