How did you get into your business?
Clare:
Was there any overlap between starting your business and working a “day” job?
Clare:
There is a constant overlap of creative jobs that I juggle still, but I never had a day job per se. I’ve been lucky enough to stay afloat through a combination of mosaic and mural jobs through Groundswell Community Mural Project and Brooklyn Arts Council, with the occasional bartending job here and there. When you live in New York and you’re doing your own thing..every day is a hustle!
Describe your craziest day of juggling your professional and personal life?
Clare:
Hmm let’s see- today for example: I have to go to Park Slope to drop off some of my artwork for an auction, then come home and sew as many pieces as I can out of the 50+ things that are on my to do list, both wholesale orders for boutiques and personal orders through my website, then I have to go to Fuerza Bruta, where I fill in as a sub for costumes/wardrobe. Somewhere in between I should probably try to eat some food…
Many people tell me that I work all the time, but I’m passionate about what I do, so I never look at it the way people in corporate America do. Do you live to work or work to live?
Clare:
I totally live to work- the only time I stop is when I’m sleeping, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! I consider myself lucky to be able to do what I do, and it’s the most satisfying thing in the world to be recognized for it. I’m basically doing the same thing I did for fun when I was 15, but now I’m getting paid for it! There are downfalls though- it’s hard for me to make plans for the kinds of fun things that it seems like everyone else gets to do. Pumpkin picking, for example! Every year I want to go on a haunted hayride and pick pumpkins, and I never make the time to do it- there’s always next year, or the year after that…I also tend to put my work before my relationships, but luckilly I found someone who is the same exact way.
It’s very convenient to be here in NYC right now- I can set up meetings easily, go out to parties on a whim and make connections with good people, and run to the garment district if I run out of thread, but since so much of my business (and most business nowadays) is done online, I really could live anywhere. I actually fantazise about it a lot. Living in the middle of the desert is pretty appealing sometimes…
Some people have an office or work from home, what is your most productive work environment?
Clare:
I have a big apartment with a separate room designated as my studio, so right now I love working from home. I’m starting to grow out of the space though, so we’ll just have to see what happens in the future.
