SCARPELLI vs. COOL HAND LUKE #136

What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate”

The next film on the list is 1967′s Cool Hand Luke, I was able to watch this one hour before it expired on HBOGO the other night. Cool Hand Luke comes in at #136 on the list of The Top 250. The rating for this film on imdb is an 8.3. This movie was directed by Stuart Rosenberg who also directed The Amityville Horror & The Pope of Greenwich Village. I was surprised that I only remembered bits and pieces of this film from my childhood.

Paul Newman plays the title character Luke, Paul Newman must have gotten so much ass in his life. Luke is sentenced to serve two years in a prison camp/ prison farm for knocking the tops off parking meters. That’s a hell of a lot of time for vandalism. Luke has a hard time adjusting to the southern prison life, but after a visit from his mother and soon to follow her death Luke wants out. He has several unsuccessful escape attempts.

Luke is met with dislike the moment he arrives in prison from another inmate Dragline portrayed by George Kennedy who most of you probably remember as Det. Ed Hocken from the Naked Gun movies. Dragline kicks the shit out of Luke early in the movie. Dragline gains a respect for Luke during the fight for Luke’s will to contentiously get up after being hit over and over again. The two become friends and Dragline gives him the nickname Cool Hand Luke during a poker game. Dragline starts off this film like a viscous grizzly bear and finishes like a lost puppy dog.

While Dragline is boasting how much food his little friend Luke can eat, he is met with an argument from other inmates. Luke makes statement that he can eat 50 hard boiled eggs in one hour and all the inmates make bets on it, Dragline takes all the wagers against Luke. I have actually seen something just like this. I was in Virginia out drinking with my cousin Eric when I was 18 years old. We stopped at a diner on the way home and this same wager was going on in this diner. There was about 10-12 people standing around this table and they had bet that this one cat could eat 50 hard boiled eggs. I watched for a few minutes and it made me sick especially because at the time I hated hard boiled eggs. I like them now, I started eating them on Cobb salads and in recent years I started eating them whole. I only had one bad experience from eating them whole. I bought 24 hard boiled eggs from Giant and by the 3rd day I ate one and it didn’t sit easy. Side note on the story about Eric and I being in that diner while we standing there watching the guy eat the eggs we started talking to two guys. The next day we were in Georgetown shopping at Urban Outfitters where I bought this blue and white striped three quarter length jacket with a hood. I wonder what happened to that jacket, I loved it. The weird thing was when we walked out of Urban Outfitters I gave some homeless lady a few bucks and then we ran into the two guys we talking to in the diner night before. My cousin said shit like that only happens to me. To get back to the movie you will have to watch it to see how the hard boiled egg wagering went.

Speaking of wagers at the beginning of the film you see a lot of a character named Gambler that is portrayed by Wayne Rodgers from the television series MASH. Then his character kind of dwindles. Some other notable appearances through out the film. The character of Carr at the beginning of the film works as a sort of prison guard and gives the rules and regulations to the inmates when they arrive. Carr is played by Clifton James who played Charles Comiskey the owner of the Chicago White Sox in Eight Men Out and also played Sy Orlansky in one my favorite childhood movies Bad News Bears in Breaking Training. I’m full of shit favorite childhood movie, it’s still one of my favorite movies.

Another treat in this movie is you get to see Harry Dean Stanton who in the credits is just Dean Stanton and plays a character named Tramp. You also get to hear him sing a version The Midnight Special which is a prison folk song that supposedly goes all the back to the early 1900′s. I personally like the Creedence Clearwater Revival version that you can hear in Twighlight Zone The Movie another awesome movie. CCR’s version is much better than ABBA version. ABBA really did record a version of this song, it’s awful. ABBA singing a prison folk song like The Midnight Special would be like Celine Dion covering Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues. You know it’s hard finding someone in the music industry who doesn’t have an arrest record. My first two choices for that analogy were John Denver and Robert Goulet both with arrest records for drunk driving, John Denver twice.

Most of you probably know Harry Dean Stanton from his role as Roman Grant on HBO’s Big Love or in my favorite role of his Bud in another one of my favorite movies Repo Man. I met Harry Dean Stanton at a bar in Hollywood he called some chick a bitch for yelling at me when I told her I didn’t have any cigarettes left. She was questioning very loudly because I put the empty cigarette pack back in my pocket. Which I always put empty cigarette packs back in my pocket because sometimes I put cash, pills or something else that might make me soar later on in the night in the cigarette pack. I don’t how many times I have thrown away perfectly good drugs or money in what I thought to be an empty cigarette pack. So, this guy at the bar calls the girl a bitch and I heard him but the back of his head was to me. When he turned around it was Harry Dean Stanton drunk looking just like Molly Ringwalds fucked up father in Pretty in Pink. I sat and chatted with him over a drink and then left to get more cigarettes.

Speaking of guys who played Molly Ringwalds fucked up father in movies. In Cool Hand Luke you get to see a younger version of the late great Dennis Hopper who also played Molly Ringwalds fucked up father in The Pick Up Artist. Hopper plays a character named Babalugats, his character is somewhat of dimwit. He mostly makes animal noises and squeals. The only thing intelligible you hear out of him the whole movie is a half of verse of Old Mac Donald.

The Director of Photography in this film was Conrad Hall who also is the DP on 2 other films on the list American Beauty & Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. This film is visually awesome. The only complaint I have about this is the run time on this film is 2 hours and 6. This movie could have been cut to an hour forty. There was a lot of repeat shots and long establishing shots. Which the length of the movie must have been a sign of the times because the editor on this film Sam O’Steen did at least 4 movies on this list including The Graduate, Rosemary’s Baby & Chinatown. All in all the acting was great especially George Kennedy who did win Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Paul Newman was nominated but lost to Rod Steiger for In the Heat of the Night.  Donn Pearce & Frank Pierson were also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay but lost to Stirling Silliphant for In the Heat of the Night. Frank Pierson later goes on to win an Oscar for Dog Day Afternoon also on the list. Imdb rating is 8.3, I think I can only give it a 6.1. What a jerk off thing to do by adding the.1. Below is the best picture I can find of that jacket I was talking about, it’s not that great a picture I’ll try to find a better one. Like always please leave your comments if for better or worse.

MATT SCARPELLI vs. SHUTTER ISLAND #251

Since this will be the first film of the blog, I want to go over a few things first. The rating system imdb has is a rating system 1-10, 10 being the highest. I will give you my ratings of each of the films as well. 2010′s Shutter Island ‘s rating on imdb is 8, I will give you my rating at the end.  Even though it was knocked off the list, it was on when I started so I’ll call it #251. I like the name Matt Scarpelli vs. The  250 better than Matt Scarpelli vs. The 251.

This film was directed by Martin Scorsese my favorite director and should be yours. I have to say Shutter Island felt more like a Stanley Kubrick film than it a Scorsese picture. I really liked where he went with this movie. I’m not afraid to say this I watched this movie when I was home alone and at one point in the movie I turned the lights on. I was a frightened little bitch, I heard every noise in the house. I felt like my head was on a fucking swivel. It takes a lot for movie to get me spooked. I find horror movies to be funny. For me to get up and turn on the lights takes a lot. I actually did laugh at myself when I did it.

This film takes place in the 1950′s after Word War II. Leonardo DiCaprio who has now starred in I believe four of Scorsese’s films plays Teddy Daniels. Teddy Daniels is a U.S Marshall who is sent to Shutter Island in New England to investigate a missing patient. Shutter Island is a mental hospital which is more like a prison for the insane criminals. The island has an eeriness about it that starts before they even get there. Teddy Daniels goes to the island with a new partner Chuck played by Mark Ruffalo. Their investigation takes a bunch of twist and turns due to the interference of two doctors that run the island played by Ben Kingsley and Max Von Sydow.

The run time of this movie was 2 hours and 18 minutes. It didn’t feel like it was that long. The acting was excellent. I really enjoyed it. The cinematography by Robert Richardson who was the DP on a few movies on The Top 250. He has shot a number of films for Scorsese as well as Oliver Stone and always puts out an excellent product. Then there is the masterful editing by Thelma Schoonmaker who has editied most of the films directed by Scorsese going all the way back to 1967′s Who’s That Knocking at My Door.

Overall I really liked this movie but I think the 8 is a little high. I’m not going to jump up that high with this film. I’ll go with 7.2. Feel free to share your opinions, whether it be to agree with me or call me an asshole. “Masterful editing” I sound like a DOUCHE!!!

SCARPELLI VS. THE 250

A few months back I was looking at imdb.com and I stumbled across The Top 250 movies. I thought to myself that would be fun to try to watch all the movies on the list. I always wanted to watch the AFI list of top 100 films but that would be the pussy route to take when there is this list of 250.  Of course the procrastinator in me forgot all about it. A couple of weeks ago I was looking for a movie a to watch, I was looking at Epix on-demand and that Shutter Island was on there. I have never seen Shutter Island so I was intrigued. I was still a little hesitant, wasn’t sure if that’s what I wanted that night. Then I remembered about the imdb Top 250. I went back and took a look at it. At this point I never went through the entire list of 250 movies. When I went to read the list this particular night I decided to read it from last to first. I went all the way down the list to #250 it was Shutter Island. I said to myself someone wants me to watch Shutter Island, so I did!!!

At this point I figured I would watch the whole list and see if I can do it in year. I think I can. The day after I watched Shutter Island I went to see what was #249 on the list. To my surprise the fucking list changed. People that go on the website vote daily so the list changes daily. F’ all that so I copy and pasted the list as of January 17th of this year. That is the list I’m going to watch. By the way Shutter Island dropped off the list. This blog for The Comedy Point will be of me going through the list and watching every film on it. I will re-watch the films I have already seen for better or worse. Then I will I post a blog on each film with my opinion and thoughts and maybe some stories that I would like to share.

Originally my plan was to watch the entire list from 250-1. The night of January 17th I was tired and I thought it wouldn’t be fair to watch a movie I have never seen before when tired.I decided to watch something I have already seen and that way if I fell asleep I can pick it up the next day from where I left off without compromising my movie watching experience. Then I started to look at what films on the list were on-demand on my premium channels as well as there internet counterparts. After going through the list again I decided it with time lines on when certain movies wouldn’t be available to me without having to hook my computer to my TV, I would watch the list out of order. 2011 was the best year for The Comedy Point to date.
And if the Mayan Calendar is correct, it could be the best year in all.

Not only did the show attract many more listeners, but it also featured some very high profile guests.

Lisa Lampanelli, Jim Norton, Mick Foley and Lizz Winstead were some of the stars that made their debut on the show this year.

Babies.

We’ve all been one. Some people have made them. Some people’s babies have made other babies.

WOW! What a topic! There’s so much common ground.

Burak Uzun is back from his self-imposed Paternity Leave and, with a shirt free of Similac, he’ll be filling us in on the many adventures he’s had as a new father.

And there’s no better time to pit the dog up against co-host Christine Meehan in another edition of The Comedy Point Battle of the Sexes.

The debate on which gender is superior is one that you can have for eternity, or at least when your girlfriend isn’t listening. One sex is complex, sensitive and nurturing and the other can lift heavy things. But barring the task of carrying a refrigerator, which gender is Better?

We’ll try to find out tomorrow when SOUL Joel hosts a test of wits between two diplomats for their respective genders.

The history of tattoos can be traced back to ancient tribes of the Aztecs and the Incas.
In recent times, these markings have been synonymous with Sailors and outlaws.
And today they can be seen on everyone from school teachers to civil servants.

Why are tattoos so popular today?

What was once the territory of the macho, is now used to mark the birth of a child and to display someone’s favorite Disney characters.

Is the prevalence of tattoos simply a fad, or does it signify a permanent change in our culture?
