Wagner College: Where Are They Now? An interview with Richard Negrin

Wagner College, SOUL Joel’s Alma matter, has been instrumental in launching his career in entertainment and hiring Soul Joel Productions for entertainment for various student and alumni events. What better way to give back to his Alma mater than to periodically spotlight fellow Wagner College Alumni on The Comedy Point’s website. This week The Comedy Point is proud to present Richard Negrin, Deputy Mayor/Managing Director of the city of Philadelphia.

How did your experience at Wagner College help you with your career?

Richard:

I came into Wagner, like many students, unfocused and full of selt doubt, not sure where or what direction to head. Four years later, I was filled with confidence and ready to start my career and further my eduction.

Where did you further your education?

Richard

At Rutgers University, where I received my law degree from Rutgers Law.

Do you still keep in touch with other Wagner Alumni?

Richard:

Yes, a couple of alumni, Mark Leibowitz, a good friend who currently sits on the board of trustees at Wagner College. Mark lived next to me at Wagner. Even Coach Walt Hameline, who I know isn’t an alumni, but I still keep in very good contact with him. In fact, coach and I grabbed dinner in Philadelphia when Wagner played at Penn a few weeks ago.

So is it safe to say, as a football player, that many of your close friends from Wagner today remain your team mates from the football team?

Richard:

Yes, through email and Facebook I keep in touch with many Wagner Alumni, but the ones that I keep in face to face contact with are from the football team.

What advice would you give others that are trying to break into your field?

Richard:

If you’re going to be in the public service business, you have to have a profound love for people. You have to be committed and smart. You have to open your door at this job and touch people. You constantly have to be out there in the community and care about people’s well being. The willingness and passion for helping others is big part of working in this field.

When did you know that you wanted to be in the politics?

Richard:

I caught the bug a little bit at Wagner. I took a few different courses like Public Policy and I’ve always been a huge
student of history, which was my favorite class every year in school.

Although I’ve never run for office. Being in public service, it’s both of the worlds coming together between history and politics. This also allows me the opportunity to work with my concern for people.

What is the one thing that helped you most throughout your life?

Richard:

There are a lot people that I can thank. But it’s been possessing the ability to push through adversity and jumping over hurdles. I’ve Always believed that persistance will pay off. Throughout my life, I’ve used this throughout my life to suceed.

What were your biggest challenges earlier on and throughout your career?

Richard:

The ability to balance family and work, being a workaholic . Presence matters for both.

Are you happy doing what you’re doing?

Richard:

I love my job. It’s the best job in the city of Philadelphia. I get to come into work every day and serve the people of Philadelphia. Working with people and trying to improve their lives and making them happier.

I don’t think I know a single person who hasn’t used Craigslist to buy something, sell something, or have sex with something. I mean someone. (Well, maybe something.) Whatever. It’s a very useful list, and I love Craig for creating it. Now, while there are MANY other services available on Craigslist, I really only use it for buying and selling things. I don’t need a roommate, a creepy babysitter, or a casual encounter. I would like to rant and rave, but that page is full of nothing but racists and homophobes with too much time on their calloused hands. Craigslist is riddled with weirdos, morons, and felons, but so far I have been lucky enough to avoid these folks. Although I can’t seem to avoid the most common of Craigslist’s problems: scammers.

All I want to do is sell a friggin’ stroller. To a normal person. With non-Monopoly money. Is that so hard? Yes. Apparently, it is. I put this ad on Craigslist a couple weeks ago:

Thank god he didn’t get hurt but of course it needed to happen NOW, when i am finally making really good money with this home income program i started doing. You know, if you want, they just opened up 3 more positions in our area. Basically you get paid to post links on the internet, it’s very simple and I usually just do it while watching TV.

Oh, and the “UGH” and mention of your sister were really nice touches. (Do you read my blog? Because I feel like you REALLY know me.) Of course I didn’t respond, and I reported the e-mail to my friend, Craig. I figured that was the end of it, but a couple days later, Hong was back:

Well, Hong, I’m not gonna lie. I’m a little pissed that you e-mailed me again. I don’t give a shit about your sister, how stubborn she is, or the fact that she made $40 in one day. Because none of that is true, and you, like the ranters and ravers, have way too much time on your hands. I’m not clicking that link so that some dude in Bangladesh can take all my personal information and either financially ruin me, or worse, send me endless spam.

I do wonder, though, how many people fall for crap like Hong’s. My favorite adult people and I were talking about this yesterday, wondering who these scammers are, why they’re all from Nigeria, and who gets sucked into their lies. I picture some little old lady on the Interwebs, trying desperately to post an ad to sell her Hummels so that she can pay her electric bill. The AOL guy tells her she has mail, and she reads this horrible, fictitious story of how this dude’s daughter is in some nightmarish Mexican prison for allegedly stealing a Snapple, and he just needs a few dollars to get down there and bail her out. Grandma is all frantic, trying to figure out how to send this guy some money because she has a daughter too and can’t imagine what this girl and her family must be going through. Oy.

Craig, your list is (mostly) awesome, but if I get one more e-mail from Hong, I may have to request a casual encounter with him so that I can tase him in the nuts. I’d be all, “Hey, Hong! *bzzzz* Where’s your sister now, bitch? Oh, and the stroller is no longer available. Peace out.”

The Battle Between Good and Poop: Potty Training Begins

For the past 6 months when I go to pick up diapers for Ali I announce to her “this is your last box of diapers!” I think I’m hoping somehow by osmosis that statement will click something in her head and she will begin using the potty effortlessly on her own. So far that tactic hasn’t worked with anyone. Now that she’s almost three it’s time for me to bite the bullet and get this girl going in the bathroom.

We’ve tried to get her into the bathroom before. If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook you’ll have seen Ali’s struggle. (Shameless plugs: Follow me on Twitter @Lazybabymama and “Like” me on Facebook) She’s pooped on the toilet, not in the toilet. And one time she ran in the bathroom to pee and decided to take her pee cup thing out of the potty and bring it into the kitchen to show daddy. Very hygienic.

I’ve gotten all my prep work done; we have the potty, the stickers, everything. I even went and let her pick out all her underwear. One backfire is she wanted to show everyone she had underwear on because she was so proud. I wasn’t too thrilled with the idea that she likes to show people her underwear, inappropriate.

I’m just so confused about the whole thing; there are so many methods. I’m cool with letting her run around the house with no diaper but what am I supposed to do when I leave the house? I don’t like going in public restrooms now I have to make her go there? Honestly we just got this diaper thing into a good flow now I have to change it. Why is growing up harder on me than it is on her?

I think maybe I’m scared of potty training after an event that happened over the summer. Ali and I were playing with the sprinkler at the park. There were a few other kids there and one young boy started to show the signs that he had to “go”. His mother, instead of taking him to the bathroom, grabbed this pop up potty from her bag and placed it on the ground. The boy promptly removed his pants and dropped a deuce … right there … in the middle of the park. She didn’t take him behind a tree or near the garbage. She just had him go for the gold right there for all to see. I almost felt bad watching, actually I’m pretty sure watching it may have been illegal but I couldn’t look away. When he was done the mother high-fived him and took the goods over to the garbage where she disposed of it. I was staring at her in horror and confusion. At that point I decided it was better to have Ali go discretely, well as discretely as possible, in her diaper in the middle of the playground rather than put on a show for the rest of the kids in the middle of the playground.

Unfortuantely diapers only get so big and the time for excuses is over. We’ve only had two … make that three accidents today but no success stories. I guess it’s a game of patience. If I can get out of this with minimal damage to her psyche I think it’s a success. If it gets to be too much don’t judge me for getting a pop up potty.

Moorestown High School, SOUL Joel’s Alma matter, has been nothing but supportive early in his career in entertainment, hiring Soul Joel Productions for various fundraiser events. In addition, SOUL Joel spoke at the high school’s, “Wellness Day,” in the Fall of 2010. What better way to give back to his Alma mater than to periodically spotlight fellow Moorestown Alumni on The Comedy Point’s website.

How were you different in your teens than you are now?

Lindsay:

I’m actually not all that different in a lot of ways! People I knew back then say I look the same, I’m still not married, no kids. In high school and college, I always had a work hard, play hard philosophy, and that hasn’t changed. I’m very young at heart even as the years tick by!

What important things have you learned over the years that have helped you become who you are today?

Lindsay:

I’ve always had a major fear of public speaking, so that’s something I’ve had to overcome. Just about every day, I learn something new at work, whether it be from the topic of my story or the people I interview. I’m proud of all of that random knowledge, and I think I’m a much better person because of it!

What were you best known for in high school?

Lindsay:

Hmmmm….maybe being that girl you always saw running or at the gym? That’s what I’ve been known for in all the different places I’ve lived. I’ve moved around a lot since high school, and I think running has been the most consistent thing in my life since then. I’ve completed two marathons and a triathlon.

Where did you picture yourself as an adult when you were in high school?

Lindsay:

I knew I wanted to work in media, but I don’t think I had any clue what exactly I would end up doing.

Did the people who knew you best think you would be doing what you’re doing now?

Lindsay:

I don’t think it was a huge surprise. A guy I graduated with once told me he always thought I wanted to be the next Britney Spears. Even though I can’t really sing and definitely can’t dance! Back in high school, I was really into Hollywood/celebrity news, so I think people would be less surprised if I had pursued entertainment reporting. Luckily, living in L.A. for three years knocked any ambitions of that out of me. At this point, I couldn’t imagine spending time “investigating” a Brangelina split when there are so many more important things happening in the world!

Was anything you did in high school or college related to what you do now?

Lindsay:

I took a journalism class in high school and wrote a few articles for the school paper. In college, I realized very late that I wanted to work in TV news. I did an internship my senior year at the Fox affiliate in Washington, DC. I ended up doing a broadcasting master’s program at the University of Southern California.

Are there any dreams in high school that you let go of? Are there any dreams that you haven’t achieved that you hoping to accomplish in the future?

Lindsay:

No dreams I have let go of. I think high school me would be really happy with where I’m at and what I’m doing now. Still A LOT of dreams to accomplish! I’m hoping to take my career as far as I possibly can!
